UK to Launch Highly Selective Visa for World’s Top Graduates on May 30

The government of the United Kingdom has unfolded its plans to initiate a “highly selective” visa program on May 30, which targets bachelor’s, master and PhD graduated students from the world’s best universities in order to support growth and innovation.

The list of institutions outside Britain that are ranked in at least two or three renowned rankings will be published by the Home Office, VisaGuide.World reports.

The initiative includes the following rankings:

  •    Times Higher Education World University Rankings
  •    Quacquarelli Symonds World University Rankings
  •    the Academic Ranking of World Universities

It has been clarified that being from the top 50 of just one of the rankings will not be considered sufficient in order to be included in the global list.

The following institutions are likely to appear on the list: Switzerland’s ETH Zurich, Canada’s University of Toronto in Canada, the University of Tokyo in Japan, as well as several top-ranked institutions in the US.

According to local media reports, qualifications must be granted no more than five years before the application date. At the same time, the visa will be valid for a period of two years for bachelor’s as well as master’s degree recipients, while for PhD holders, three years.

“The new High Potential Individual route will make it as simple as possible for internationally mobile individuals at an early stage of their careers who demonstrate high potential to come to the UK. Bringing those with the most potential to the UK can boost growth and drive the international competitiveness of the UK’s most innovative businesses and sectors,” Minister for Safe & Legal Migration Kevin Foster pointed out in this regard.

According to the UK’s government, bringing to the country the world’s most promising talent can boost growth and also increase the international competitiveness of Britain’s most innovative businesses and sectors. According to authorities in the UK, the new visa will permit Britain to bring the most sought-after graduates to the country while also broadening Britain’s skill base.

On the other hand, according to some sources, the new route may jeopardize the graduate route, which requires skillful students to pursue their studies at British universities before acquiring access to employment.

All persons who participate in this scheme will be allowed to work in any job in Britain without the need for a sponsorship or a degree from a specific university in the UK; still, they must meet £1,270 financial requirements in addition to English conditions.
