The United Kingdom’s government has recalled that one year has passed since Britain launched the points-based migration system that aims to attract talented and skilled persons from all over the world.
Through a statement published by the country’s government, the introduction of such a scheme marked the biggest shift in immigration policy in recent history, VisaGuide.World reports.
The system aims to attract skilled workers engaged in specific fields such as hospitality, construction, health, social care, science, and research, among others.
The program also means that the British immigration system is under the control of the UK government. It has given the British firms the freedom to recruit and employ persons taking into account the skills and talent they offer.
In this regard, Home Secretary Priti Patel has stressed that the UK’s decision to leave the European Union permitted the UK to end freedom of movement and impose a new points-based immigration system in order to control who can enter the country in a lawful way.
“But illegal migration remains a long-standing problem with the number of small boats crossing the Channel unsafe, unfair and unacceptable. My New Plan for Immigration will reduce the pull factors in our asylum system, enabling us to have full control of our immigration system,” the statement reads.
Based on the statement published by the UK’s government, the Skilled Worker route experienced a profound increase in visa numbers, up 45,866 to 126,017, and the Global Talent Visa Program saw an increase from 595 to 2,786 visas issued by the end of September 2021.
The same source shows that, in comparison, a total of 110,721 Skilled Worker visas were granted by the end of September 2019, while 80,151 were granted by the end of September 2020. Such figures mainly resulted from the spread of the Coronavirus and its new strains, which also have affected the migration process.
The UK’s government has also announced that the number of visas issued for work and study purposes has recovered compared to the pre-pandemic levels, showing that the UK continues to attract talents and skilled persons from other territories in order to help the economic sector recover faster from the damages caused by the Coronavirus pandemic.
The Minister for Safe and Legal Migration Kevin Foster has stressed that the system helps businesses to focus on their UK workforces, investing in British people and skills while also helping the development of the country’s economy.
“At the same time, we recognize there are jobs where we need the expertise and skills of overseas workers and extraordinarily talented people who want to make the UK their home. Under our points-based immigration system, people who want to contribute to our society will be welcome, based on their skills and talents, not where their passport is from,” the Minister emphasized.
Authorities in the United Kingdom have revealed that more visa routes will open during the next year to provide more opportunities for businesses to recruit talented and skilled workers to work in Britain.
