ABSTRACT

This thesis is about the position of women in Borno society, and the various roles they played therein from C.1750 to C.1893. The first Chapter starts with establishing the necessity of such a research and examining the many perspectives within which the position of women in society can be studied. Because of the existence of many theoretical Possibilities for such a research, the Chapter attempted a critique of the three main ones and why one of them, historical materialism is accepted by the researcher as the method of this investigation. Consequently, Chapter Two undertakes an examination of economic production and the appropriation of surplus in Borno, with a view to establishing property and class relations in the system. It was found out that this activity and the appropriation of peasant surplus produce formed the bedrock of the state. Then Chapter Three, drawing from the previous chapter tried to establish the class structure of the society and the position of women in that structure. It turned out that women just like men were divided into the various classes which existed in that society. Chapter Four undertakes an overview of women in a field exclusive to them, domestic labour. Here, is explored the role women played in the reproduction of the human species. The last part of this chapter concludes the thesis by drawing together all the conclusions reached on the nature of the Borno an society, and the double edged oppression women experienced.
