Abstract:

The study, entitled ‘Praise Epithet: An Analysis of Female Royal Praise Singers’ like numerous others, aims at examining the folk culture of the Hausa people from a literary perspective, through the application of ethnographic theory for analysis. As a systematic theory that notes cultural practices in any given society. The study draws its data from six Hausa Emirate Councils: Kabin Argungu, Daura, Kazaure, Kano, Hadeja and Zazzau. The study therefore discusses the theme, style and structure of the text to analyses the import of the praise epithets. The theme, which is largely panegyric, eulogizes the Royal Lords with five variable; genealogical pedigree, bravery and capacity to face up challenges, ability to guide his subjects and protect their religion, administrative qualities and generosity towards the needy. In effect; the research further affirms that literature is a mirror that reflects the socio-political as well as the history and life of a community. Similarly, the work documents that women are also a factor to be reckoned within a Hausa Court.
