SYSTEME PHONOLOGIQUE DU FRANÇAIS ET DU FULFULDE: IMPLICATIONS PEDAGOGIQUES

Abstract:

This work aims at identifying phonological difficulties of Fulbe learners of French, through a comparative study of the phonological systems of the two languages. The study will help in giving more attention to some phonological aspects that can facilitate the learning process of French as a foreign language to Fulfulde native speakers. The study is of utmost importance in providing useful information that can help both teachers and students of French in learning the correct pronunciation of French phonemes for effective communication. Some phonological interferences were observed which can easily change the original meaning of the message between the speaker and hearer which automatically creates a communication gap among them. The study reveals that Fulbe learners of French have some phonological problems in the pronunciation of some French sounds that are absent in Fulfulde, such as the French front rounded vowels /y/,/ø/, /ə/, /oe/, the semi-vowel /ɥ/. It is also observed that some syllabic structures that are absent in Fulfulde but present in French were also found difficult to handle by Fulbe learners of French. The study applied the use of questionnaires and text reading of some selected French words which were presented to the informants in order to obtain their pronunciation that can be used for the research analysis. The research recommends some measures that can facilitate teaching and learning of French as a foreign language.
