THE BEHAVIOUR AND DESIGN OF REINFORCED CONCRETE SHORT CANTILEVERS UNDER PURE TORSION

Abstract:

A theory for the design of reinforced concrete short cantilever under pure torsion is presented. It is based on the shear-friction theory. The failure plane assumed is supported by observations on test-specimens. Based on the failure surface, the failure torque was found to be primarily a function of percentage of longitudinal reinforcement, dimension of the cross section and the characteristic strength of steel. The torsional capacities of reinforced specimens tested agreed well with the theoretically predicted values. Torsional reinforcement perpendicular to the assumed crack at the root of the cantilever is preferred to reinforcement inclined at 45 to the axis of the short cantilever.
