KNOWLEDGE AND PERCEPTION TOWARDS TRANSMISSION AND PREVENTION OF COVID 19 AMONG OKE OGUN POLYTECHNIC STUDENTS SAKI OYO STATE
FAILURE
ABSTRACT
This study examinedthe Knowledge and perception towards transmission and prevention of covid 19 among the Oke Ogun polytechnic students sakioyo state. The study adopted an exploratory assessment design based on the use of Surveyinstruments was adopted for the study. The target population adopted for this study comprised of all students of the polytechnic. The sample population for this study comprised of two hundred (200) respondents from the polytechnic. Simple Random sampling was used to choose the sample size for this study. The research employed primary and secondary sources of data. Primary data were gathered through questionnaires distributed among the Among the selected two hundred (200) respondent. The data gathered from the questionnaire were analysed and presented in frequency and percentage tables. The data were also interpreted and the chi square statistical test was used to test the stated hypothesis. The result revealed that adequate knowledge of coronavirus infection by students is Paramount in preventing the spread of the virus. The study recommended that health seminars should be organized to inform students on Covid-19 prevention mechanisms.
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
Corona viruses are common viruses that most people get sometime in their life and may also infect animals. Human coronaviruses (hCoV) which has been globally trending for over a couple of months now usually causes upper respiratory tract illnesses (Olapegba et al 2020). Sars- Cov2 commonly known as Covid-19 which was first identified in China is now on a global spread. COVID-19 is a novel viral disease discovered in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China in 2019 and is caused by severe
acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2)
(Chen et al., 2020). The clinical presentation of COVID-19 symptoms include fever, fatigue, dry cough, malaise and breathing difficulty (Rine et al 2020). The infection has no immediate treatment and vaccine, and it has according to World Health Organization become a worldwide pandemic causing significant morbidity and mortality (Olapegba et al2020; WHO, 2020). Precautions are being taken to limit its spread by various government of affected nations and the world over. The implementation of social isolation policies, such as shutting educational institutions, limiting work and restricting the mobility of people as preventive actions to limit the spread of the virus are among measures in curtailing the spread of the virus.
The first case of COVID-19 was reported in Nigeria on 27th February 2020 and since then, there has been a steady rise in both the number of cases and deaths from the disease (NCDC 2020). Prior to the WHO pronouncement of COVID-19 as a global public health challenge and pandemic, many Nigerians regarded the disease as a distant white man’s infirmity that could never spread to their abode (Rine et al 2020). The public opinion within Nigeria was that COVID-19 is a “big man disease” (i.e. disease of the highly influential persons (ibid 2020). However, the number of deaths recorded by Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) which is more than 320 has debunked this perception.
Given the importance of knowledge of precautionary activities in curbing the spread of infectious diseases such as the novel COVID-19, it is important that health workers be well vested with the knowledge of COVID-19 prevention measures. COVID-19 poses a huge threat to hospital staff because of their constant exposure to infected persons and so, it is imperative that health care workers are protected and disease transmission in hospitals prevented (Chioma et al 2020). Bhagavathula et al. (2020) in a survey among health care workers reported poor knowledge of Coronavirus disease among health care workers globally. Further research in this area is gaining much popularity in other countries but not in Nigeria. As a result this study intends to examine theKnowledge and perception towards transmission and prevention of covid 19 among the Oke Ogun Polytechnic Students Saki Oyo State.
COVID-19 has had a rapid global spread because of closer international integration and transmission through carriers without symptoms which is very different from dynamics of past epidemics. Healthcare workers are central in the fight against COVID 19 infection as they offer treatment, which makes them vulnerable to the disease. Their knowledge, attitude, and practice of the preventive measures may play important role in limiting the infection among health workers and reducing the spread to patients, family, and the community. Inadequate knowledge will lead to an increase transmission among staff and further spread in the communities (Olum et al 2020). This has made necessary a study to divulge students knowledge , attitude and perception towards COVID-19. This will help inform relevant authorities on what considerations to make as it works at adjusting its policies to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
The above problem has led this study to examine the Knowledge and perception of the transmission and prevention of COVID-19 among students in Oke Ogun Polythenic, Saki, Oyo State.
This research intends to address the following questions:
- What is the level of knowledge of students in in Oke Ogun Polythenic, Saki, Oyo State towards Covid-19?
- What is the perception of studentsinOKe Ogun Polythenic, Saki, Oyo Statetowards the transmission of Covid-19?
- How fatal do students perceive COVID-19 and how can it be prevented?
1.4 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
The main objective of this study is toexamine the Knowledge and perception towards transmission and prevention of covid 19 among the Oke Ogun Polytechnic Students Saki Oyo State.
1.4.1. SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
- Determine the level of knowledge of students in in OkeOgun Polythenic, Saki, Oyo Statetowards Covid-19.
- Ascertain the attitude of studentsinOke Ogun Polythenic, Saki, Oyo State towards the transmission of Covid-19.
- Obtain the perception pf students on how fatal COVID-19 is and how can it be prevented
1.5 RESEARCH HYPOTHESIS
There are two types of hypothesis, which are null hypothesis and alternative hypothesis.
The null hypothesis is denoted by (Ho) while the alternative hypothesis is denoted by (Hi). Testing the following hypothesis will provide answers to the research questions:
Ho: Students knowledge has no significant effect on the prevention of COVID-19 in in Oke Ogun Polythenic, Saki, Oyo State
Hi: Students knowledge has significant effect on the prevention of COVID-19 in in Oke Ogun Polythenic, Saki, Oyo State.
1.6 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
The outcome of the study will guide health institutions, the Ministry of health, policy makers in government and relevant authorities to draft policies that will help promote the health sector through the current panic situation caused by corona virus pandemic. The study will also come out with recommendations that can be taken to depress the spread of coronavirus pandemic in order to enhance national development. Furthermore, it would serve as reference documents to the academics and researchers and to all those interested in this area of research.
1.7 SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY
The study will examine the Knowledge and perception of the transmission and prevention of COVID-19 among studentsinOke Ogun Polythenic, Saki, Oyo State. The researcher was limited by the reluctance of some respondents to comply with the study as well as financial restrain which restricted the adoption of a larger sample for the study.
1.8 ORGANIZATION OF THE STUDY
The study is organized into five chapters. Chapter one is the introduction of the study and it includes the background description, problem definition, objectives of the study, significance of the study, scope, limitations of the study and research methodology. Chapter two is the literature review of the study and the theoretical framework. This reviews relevant literatures of authors and other researchers relating to the research topic. Chapter three deals with the research methodology which looks at methods adopted in carrying out the study. Chapter four focuses on data presentation and analysis whiles chapter five presents a summary of the study, findings and conclusions drawn from the findings and recommendations of the study
