Abstract

Empowerment of women for National Development has been recognized world-wide. Various national and international studies have been undertaken to examine the effectiveness of their contributions. The findings of these studies as well as those of the development experts have stimulated further concerns for the role of women in development. Women, who constitute a great percentage of the world population, are not making corresponding impact on development process. Instead, they are increasingly becoming passive actors in the development process. This has become a matter of serious intellectual concern. Consequently, the need for empowering women through literacy for socio-economic and political progress in Nigeria has become absolutely essential. This equally, becomes a vital reason for this study. The study examined the deplorable conditions of women the world over, analyzed the potentials of Nigerian women in national development, highlighted the political discriminatory tendencies against women in Nigeria; the study also discussed various ways and strategies for empowering women through literacy for socio-economic and political progress in Nigeria and concluded by asserting that women are indispensable in national development and that unless women are empowered as partners, sustainable development will be hampered.
