AN EVALUATION OF THE PERFORMANCE OF NITEL PLC AND ITS CONTRIBUTIONS TO GROSS DOMISTIC PRODUCT (GDP) IN NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

Telecommunication is an essential ingredient for economic growth and development of society. It is a sector on which all other sectors depend for their survival. An efficient telecommunication system has positive impact on the development of a modern society. Countries lacking modern telecommunication infrastructure cannot compete effectively in the global economy. This research is aimed at evaluating the performance and contribution of NITEL Plc to GDP in Nigeria. The choice of Nitel Plc is based on its premiership position in the telecommunication industry of Nigeria. The use of primary and secondary source of data collection methods became paramount in this study in order to arrive at the fact of information collected by the researcher. The result of the statistical investigation revealed a functional relationship between telecommunication and GDP of any nation. It went further to establish that the higher the teledensity of any nation, the higher will be the growth of the GDP of that nation. Another important technique was adopted i.e. total factor productivity analysis in NITEL. Base the findings, recommendations are made, tasking government on the proper solutions to NITEL’S problem and poor performance. The need to work out.
