A PRAGMATIC ANALYSIS OF AKURMI NAMING SYSTEM

Abstract:

Pragmatics is one of the areas where several theories have been propounded in search of hidden meaning as far as language use is concerned. This research is a pragmatic Analysis of Akurmi naming system. The study is inspired by the need to disambiguate the hidden meanings in certain Akurmi names that may sound strange and derogatory. The objectives are centred on how Akurmi names may be analysed based on context and how these names depict the Akurmi worldview. The selected names that served as data for analysis are collected using oral interview, direct observation, library research and personal intuition of the speaker as a native speaker. A total of 122 names were collected. The theoretical framework for this work, which is Bayo Lawal‟s Model of a Pragmatic theory, is used in analysing the names so collected. As a result of this analysis, the study observes that indeed Akurmi names depend to a large extent on context and that indeed, the names such as Unina, Nchiye, Achanem among others have meaning.
