NIGERIA – BRAZIL RELATIONS

Abstract:

In this study, we examine various aspects of relations between Nigeria and Brazil in the general framework of South-South Relations of two developing countries with differing levels of industrialisation. Our theoretical focus is the dependency perspective which we use to explain the idea of South-South cooperation in which there is asymmetrical development. We analysed the historical development, economic, socio-cultural, diplomatic and political relations between The two countries. We attempted to show that the idea of South-South Cooperation cannot be mutually beneficial to the parties where there is asymmetrical development between the parties. This clearly manifests itself in our study of relations between Nigeria and Brazil. While economic relations might be skewed in favour of Brazil to the detriment of Nigeria, cultural relations between them does not follow the same pattern of dependence. What exists is more of interdependence or mutual relationship. It is however clear from the study that Brazilian multinational corporations exploit this cultural links to foster her economic interests in Nigeria. While the economic relation between two countries remain the pivot on which other relations revolve, the Nigeria-Brazil relationship is not devoid of empty commitments on political issues.
