ATTITUDE OF SECONDARY SCHOOL TEACHERS IN SAPELE METEROPOLIS TOWARDS SCHOOL BASED EDUCATIONAL BROADCASTING ON RADIO
ABSTRACT
The study examines the attitude of teachers towards school based educational broadcasting in Sapele metropolis. The study was anchored on the theory of selective theory which concern with the attitudes of individuals towards educational broadcasting. The research work was carried out using the survey design. The sample size of 80 was administered questionnaire. The purposive which gives the sample equal chances of being selected was employed and the data from the questionnaire was selected, collated and analyzed. The study showed that the level of knowledge is relatively high, the format for producing educational programmes supports classroom teaching and learning, the programmes does not match with school curriculum as such affect the attitude of secondary school teachers towards educational broadcasting, teachers show interest for educational broadcast as entertainment function, educational broadcasting programmes should be well produced to reflect the educational needs of secondary school students rather than be an entertainment programme. The producers should endeavour to make meaningful research on the subject so as to contribute to school curriculum and secondary school teachers’ should be co-opted in the production of educational programmes.

INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Educational based radio broadcasting is becoming common and necessary in secondary school education because of the complementary role it plays in the development of student learning, skill and abilities. Agbamche (2015), the fact that students are more captivated by radio especially school based broadcast, it become essential that teachers should use it for either effective teaching aid.
The contents of educational broadcasting are professionally produced by radio station producers with development of students in secondary school education. As it stands, many students take delight with these programmes because they find it useful to their development. Myers (2008, pointed out that radio educational programmes cover current affairs, magazine, interview and comments, studio discussion programme, vox pop, radio drama, lecturers, quiz, show, storytelling, poetry. The success of educational based radio broadcast depends on the transmission of high quality programmes which should support the current needs of both teachers and students. According to Uwen, Sunny and John (2014), it has been provided that radio can teach, present new concepts and inform effectively, when good programmes are given.
Many teachers do not have adequate knowledge of electronic media technologies like radio, computer, and educational software Myers (2008). Many primary and secondary schools in Nigeria especially private owned are strongly encouraging teachers to develop and have indeed created programme that effectively transmit contents to the students thus freeing the teachers to assist students individually.
School based educational broadcasting is known as the educational programmes from broadcast media targeting at increasing educational learning among students and pupils at secondary and primary schools respectively, (Uwen et al, 2014).
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Educational broadcasting on radio that dwells on classroom subjects is not strange in Nigerian broadcast industry. Accordingly several studies have focused on the different issues relating to use of radio to transmit educational programmes. In a paper on educational broadcasting through radio, Das (2013), notes that radio can be used as an effective tool in education in the formal field of knowledge and that it has actually been used to support a wide range of subject areas in different countries around the world.
In the study of the use of electronic media in Nigerian educational system, Agbamuche (2015) reports that the challenges to the use of radio for classroom education in Nigeria includes inadequate infrastructure, underfunding over dependent of institution on government and poor condition of infrastructure on education. Uwen, Sunny and John (2014), in their study on the dysfunctional trends in Nigeria educational broadcasting identifies the ignorance of teachers with regards to perfect use of educational broadcasting to compliment classroom teaching as a barrier.
The studies above have provided perspectives on the issue of the use of radio for school subject based educational broadcast. Nevertheless, there is need to critically examine the attitude of secondary school teachers within a manageable locality such as Sapele metropolis To what extent are teachers in Sapele conversant with school based educational broadcast? What is the level of their exposure to school based educational broadcasting? What is their attitude to school based educational broadcast? These questions became necessary because of the presence of a gap in knowledge in this direction. It is the intension of this study to attempt to fill these gaps in knowledge through this examination of attitude of secondary school teachers to school based educational broadcasting in sapele metropolis.
1.3 Objectives of the Study objectives
The study is guided by the following objectives.
- To examine the extent to which teachers in Sapele Metropolis conversant with school based educational broadcasting.
- To measure the level of exposure of teachers to school based education broadcasting in Sapele metropolis
- To examine the attitude of teachers in Sapele metropolis towards school based education broadcasting.
1.4 Research Questions
The study is guided by the following research questions.
- To what extent are teachers in Sapele metropolis conversant with school based educational broadcasting?
- What is the level of exposure of teachers in Sapele metropolis towards school based educational broadcast?
- What is the attitude of teachers in Sapele metropolis to school based educational broadcasting?
1.5 Significance of Study
The study extensively examines the extent to which teachers in Sapele metropolis are conversant with school based educational broadcasting. By so doing, the study enables teachers to know if they have good knowledge of school based educational broadcasting.
Secondly, the study exposes teachers to know more about educational broadcasting as they relate to teaching and learning in classroom environment as well as knowing the right application.
Thirdly, the study brings discover the attitude of teachers towards school base educational broadcasting. In the case of negative attitude revealed in the findings, the study recommends quality attitude towards school based educational broadcasting.
Apart from the above, the radio which is the most powerful medium of communication because of its penetrative influence into the hitter land has contributed to the development of education in Nigeria.
This study provides national educational policymakers the opportunity to appreciate the contributions of radio in educational development. Evaluate the attitude and perception of secondary school teachers in adopting radio educational broadcasting.
1.6 Scope of the Study
The scope of this study covers teachers in secondary school from Sapele metropolis in Delta State. Also, the time frame for the study covers a period of six months which is from January to June 2017.
1.7 Definition of Terms
Educational Broadcasting: This is a programme content that centers on education of student at all levels for them to learn more.
Formal Field of Knowledge: This is an official field of study that is back up with approved universal curriculum such as primary school, secondary school and tertiary institution.
School Based Educational Broadcasting: These are programmes that are produced by television and radio production with educational objectives.
Radio: This is a medium in mass communication that broadcast information in form of programmes for listening audience. It deals with sound.
Teacher: A person whose responsibility is to teach in a formal educational system for the purpose of impacting knowledge of the students.
