1.1 Background of the study
Man has used and abused certain substances since time immemorial. In almost all cultures there has been the desire of men. Consciously or unconsciously to escape from monolony, frustration and pains to seek euphoria or sense of well being when taking part in different achievement tasks substance such as alcohol, marijuana and tobacco are no exception these substances are induced among the psychoactive substance according to siliva (2006) is increasing among student and this has become a major public health and social concern.
Substance used in the world varies considerably from region and from one nation to another (Parry, 1998) estimate of UNDCP (1997) showed that marijuana is the most widely used substance in all part of the world an estimate of 14 million people consuming it.
The report further stated that a large number of young people experiment with marijuana with as high as 37% of school children and young adult consumers.
The past decades has seen new trend in substances use by college student (steward, 2001) in the same vain hales (2007) asserted that drug use in universities campus is on the increase with almost half of the undergraduate attesting to the fact that they have used marijuana.
Tracing the increase, the researcher discovered that substance use on campus started in 1990 with the steepest rise in mid 1993 the discovery also showed that drug use increases most dramatically among minority of student with the highest rate of drugs use particularly among Nigerians sue, (2006).
Much of the substances uses among youths take place in schools (Okoza and Aluede 2009). Hilteto, (2007) observed that some undergraduate students drink more after and more dangerously than young people of their age who are not in school.
An epidemiological survey conducted on student by federal ministry of Education in Nigeria (1999) found out that 11% of the student have smoked cigarettes while 5% have used cannabis, in the same vein. Yusuf (2010) reported that 81 student from Osun state institution were caught using illicit substances in 2009 by National Drug Law Enforcement Agency moreover, various researcher then have posited on the relationship between the level of awareness of substances use and the rate of consumption among student. For example, shafugetal (2006) discovered that the greater the knowledge of harmful effect of drugs the lessen the consumption on the contrary, Route etal (2011) reported that despite a fairly high level of awareness of health effect from smokers tobacco use in maharashal and Bihas, the majority of smokers tobacco users had no intention to quit.
A capsule review of literature showed a divergent view as to whether the knowledge regarding the consequences of substance use among adolescent and young adult is enough to prevent them from initiating and continuing its use. This is a question that needs to be answered and determined empirically. It is against this background that substance use amongst the pupils in secondary schools.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
It is generally known that human societies are faced with numerous problems and challenges in like manners, institution found with such societies are also engulfed by societal problems and therefore the students in Nsit Ibom Zone who constitute a faction of leaders of tomorrow are no exception to the problem of the use of drugs.
Teachers in the secondary schools have observed with dismay and regret the non–challant attitude of some students toward their studies. Some of them do not come to school regularly and some others when they come do not stay in the class for their lessons, as most of them prefer to stay in their hideout where they carry out their nefarious activities such as smoking and taking of alcohol. It is news these days to hear of student bullying other student and even some of them fighting their teachers as well as school authorities.
Most schools are experiencing one form of disturbances/demonstration or the other, recently due to drug use/misuse, it was reported that some student in Federal Government Collage in Rivers heat their fellow student to death such sporadic violent behavior exhibited by students are mostly carried out on the influence of the use of drugs. The health implication of self medication among our secondary school student has become a source of concern for so many well meaning Nigerians.
In view of the fact that drug use is gradually gaining ground among Nigeria youth and also for the fact that it has done irreparable harm to most families as well as tendering most people useless, its become imperative that something ought to be done to correct the situation.
